2018 Fun Day

2018 Fun Day

This was the second Fun Day we had held at Escot Park, Ottery St Mary by kind permission of Mr and Mrs J-M Kennaway.  As always the weather is key to its success  and this year the forecast was for a very hot day on 22nd July. Understandably some people stayed away and there were less present than last year. Those who did come were well prepared, bringing a variety of sun umbrellas and gazebos and many were able to set up under the shade of the huge oak tree right by the dog show ring.

In the morning there was a welcome breeze, good news for those taking part in the Fastest Recall or the Lure Coursing.

Gary and Sue Peskett have  been bringing the heavy lure coursing equipment all the way from West Parley, Dorset for at least 13 years, skilfully setting up courses at our Fun Days, most memorably in the meadow below Ugbrooke House. We were delighted to see them again at Escot where they set a short and easy course in the part of the field that had a fair covering of grass. Always run in a non competitive way, it was good to see both experienced runners and first timers taking part and clearly enjoying themselves, engaged in what whippets do best.  A large bath of water and wet towels were provided at the end for essential cooling down.

The Fastest Recall was run over about 50 metres in a fenced in area. Most  competitive with times very close, this year it was won by Catriona Ryan with Quizz, closely followed by 2nd Harry with Raynor and 3rd Biddy Trouton with Crumpet, 4th was Bridget with Esme, and 5th Dan with Walter.

The Fun Dog Show was judged by Sheila Lane this year who did a great job and indeed made it fun for everyone. There were some beautiful rosettes, all recycled  by Margaret MacWilliams.

The gala tent housed the raffle with many lovely prizes, thank you everyone. The refreshments, delicious as ever, with sandwiches and a variety of home made cakes to tempt  us. The tables outside, complete with parasols were a good place to relax with a cuppa and catch up with friends old and new.

Most sincere thanks to all the owners and their whippets who supported us and to the many helpers who worked so hard both in setting up on the Saturday evening and on the day itself……… we simply could not manage without you!
